The ToughEye camera was built to withstand the abuse of the mining industry, and specifically, for mobile equipment applications. The cameras are designed to operate outdoors and in high impact and shock environments, making them well designed for almost any type of industrial application.

The ToughEye can operate as both an IP (network) and analog camera. IP cameras are typically used in fixed plant applications, and analog cameras are typically used in mobile equipment applications. The ToughEye also has self-cleaning functionality.

The ToughEye self-cleans in a similar way that your eyelid flushes your eye of debris. The lens rotates through a microfilm that ‘reconditions’ the lens surface. The dirt is ‘pulled’ off the lens without the risk of the lens scratching from abrasive material.

The microfilm does Not wipe clean or act as a squeegee by rubbing contaminants off the lens.

If the camera is left to operate without intervention, the lens will Not scratch over time from the self-cleaning cycles. If material is consistently rubbed into the lens (i.e. a worker attempts to clean off abrasive material by rubbing a rag on the lens) then it has the same risk of scratching as other lenses.

The contaminants are discharged by the microfilm, and simply fall off the lens. The camera needs to operate pointing horizontally or downwards for the material to effectively fall off. Please contact Marathon Industries if a customer application requires the camera to point upwards.

Other self-cleaning cameras use pressurized air or fluid lines to clean camera lenses, or mechanical wipers to wipe the lens clean. These types of systems require upkeep and maintenance over time. The microfilm technology used by the ToughEye requires no maintenance.

The ToughEye is rated to operate to 40,000 cleaning cycles.

The ToughEye will continue to operate as normal after the 40,000 cycles. Many ToughEyes have operated well beyond 40,000 cycles, with some reaching 300,000 cleaning cycles and still operating. For a fee the customer can chose to send the camera back for refurbishment, where the lens cleaning components will be replaced, and the camera will be rated for another 40,000 cleaning cycles.

The self-cleaning cycles can be configured to operate at defined intervals (i.e. every hour, twice per day, etc.), at certain times of day (i.e. 6am and 6pm), or triggered manually via 24VDC trigger wires that can be connected to a certain voltage signal (i.e. haul truck reverse gear signal).
